The birth of a foal is a special moment you don’t want to miss. At the same time, it’s one of the most vulnerable moments in the life of a mare and her foal. Since 1992, Birth Alarm has helped horse owners worldwide to be present at birth in time with systems whose effectiveness has been proven in practice and in scientific research.
To this day, the same company stands behind Birth Alarm as when the system was developed. Together with inventor Kuno Bleijenberg, the Dijkstra family introduced the first professional birth alarm system for horses in 1992. That same family still works daily on the continued development of our products, ensuring continuity, commitment and quality.
By now, more than 1,000,000 foals have been safely born with the help of Birth Alarm.

How Birth Alarm came about
Until the early 1990s, watching was the only reliable way to be present at birth in time. Other systems on the market were insufficiently accurate and gave too many false alarms. In 1991, extensive research was conducted into the behavior of mares during birth. This revealed one crucial observation:
During labor contractions, virtually every mare lies completely on her side.
This discovery formed the basis for Birth Alarm. In 1992, the first system was launched and from that moment it became an indispensable tool for breeders. The research concluded, among other things, that:
- 100% of births were correctly detected
- the system is user-friendly and comfortable
- it is highly recommended from a veterinary perspective
